Wildfire Midseason 2026: Incidents, Lessons, Trends and Debrief

These eight fires total 320,907 reported acres and a documented suppression-cost floor of approximately $109.3 million. Several costs were last published before full containment, so the actual eventual total will definitely be higher, especially as more major incidents almost inevitably crop up. 1. Wild Horse Fire — May 13

Lightning ignited the fire southwest of Leamington at approximately 2:30 p.m. Initial relative humidity was reported near 2%, with southwesterly wind driving fire through grass, sagebrush and scattered juniper. It reached roughly 1,000 acres within hours and ultimately mapped at 7,025 acres. No community evacuations or structure losses were reported. Weekend storms cooled hot spots but also made sections of the wet perimeter temporarily unsafe to inspect; containment was 95% on May 18 and subsequently recorded at 100%. 

The documented response reached 110 personnel, three crews and eight engines. Aircraft supported the initial attack, while ground resources secured, patrolled and mopped up the perimeter. The operational lesson is the speed at which a natural ignition can become a large incident in cured fine fuels: initial-attack decisions were being made in an atmosphere dry enough that essentially every exposed fine fuel was available to burn.

2. Tower Fire — June 7

The Tower Fire began just before 2 p.m. south of Scipio near I-15 milepost 185. It grew from approximately 40 acres to more than 1,000 acres during its first burning period as strong southerly wind pushed it through critically dry brush and juniper. The official classification is human-caused, but the precise ignition mechanism was not conclusively released. US-50/SR-50 between Scipio and Salina and local frontage roads were closed; no mandatory residential evacuation or structure loss was reported.

Aircraft dropped water and retardant during the initial run. At least one Hotshot crew was engaged and three more were ordered; subsequent NIFC reporting listed 52 personnel, one crew and five engines. After the wind moderated or shifted, crews secured line, extinguished heat near the edge and conducted suppression repair. The rapid move from 40 to approximately 1,280 acres illustrates how highways are useful access and holding features but can simultaneously become exposure and traffic-management problems.

3. Iron Fire — June 19

The human-caused Iron Fire started at approximately 10:45 p.m. on private land northwest of Eureka. Extreme drought, heat, single-digit humidity, receptive grass and brush, and gusty wind produced very rapid expansion: roughly 1,000 acres became more than 13,000 within a day and approximately 22,000 by June 21. Eureka and surrounding ranches were evacuated; later threats from the combined Iron–Cherry complex affected Mammoth and Silver City. US-6 and local roads were closed. Six structures were recorded lost, although reporting did not characterize them as primary residences.

Peak documented strength was 628 personnel, 16 crews, 27 engines and five helicopters under a Great Basin complex team. Structure defense and a successful strategic firing operation north of Eureka removed fuel ahead of the main fire and helped protect the town. Another important complication was the proximity of the Tintic/Eureka Mills Superfund area: personnel were warned about possible lead and contaminated-dust exposure and the need for clothing and equipment decontamination. This was consequently both a wildfire and occupational-exposure problem.

4. Cottonwood Fire — June 22

The human-caused Cottonwood Fire began near Cottonwood Campground, about five miles east of Beaver. A rare Particularly Dangerous Situation Red Flag Warning accompanied sustained wind around 35 mph, gusts near 45 mph and very poor overnight humidity recovery. The wind grounded aircraft during a crucial period and pushed the fire from roughly 70,000 to more than 92,000 acres overnight. Later monsoonal moisture helped moderate behavior, but persistent interior heat and difficult terrain have kept the incident at 95% containment. 

Mandatory evacuations included Eagle Point, Hi Lo Estates and Merchant Valley, while Marysvale, Junction and Circleville prepared for possible evacuation. Eagle Point suffered especially severe damage—more than 100 condominium units and about 30 cabins were reported destroyed—and NIFC ultimately recorded 185 structures lost. 

At peak strength the operation exceeded 1,300 personnel, with 35 crews, 40 engines, 11 helicopters, air tankers, Hotshots, dozers, water tenders, heavy equipment and structure-protection groups. The fire demonstrates a hard aviation truth: aircraft may be essential to support line construction, yet the weather that makes them most necessary may make them unavailable.

5. Cherry Fire — June 26

Lightning ignited the Cherry Fire southwest of Mammoth during the June 26 dry-thunderstorm and wind event. Several starts—including the Cherry Creek and Maple Peak areas—grew together, producing running, flanking and torching in grass, sagebrush and juniper. The fire was managed alongside the Iron Fire and ultimately burned 34,252 acres. Evacuations or closures affected Mammoth, Silver City, Chimney Rock Pass, Vernon Reservoir, Lofgreen and nearby ranches; one structure was recorded lost. Utah Fire Info fact sheetfinal incident record.

Peak reporting showed 412 personnel, 16 crews and 18 engines; later assignments included two helicopters. Crews combined direct line, road and dozer line, structure defense and indirect firing while the same management organization allocated resources between Iron and Cherry. The two-fire operation is a good example of why complex management, unified prioritization and shared contingency lines matter when adjacent communities face simultaneous threats.

6. Wild Goose Fire — June 26

Also lightning-caused, Wild Goose started east of Holden and south of Scipio. The same dry, windy pattern produced running fire, spotting and rapid expansion to approximately 9,000 acres by June 28. It crossed US-50 into the Gap area, prompting the evacuation of four homes and closures or evacuations affecting highway traffic, campgrounds and recreation sites. The final mapped acreage was 12,665; no structures were lost. 

The response reached 589 personnel, 16 crews, 28 engines and three helicopters; another reporting day listed seven helicopters. Crews used dozers, hand line, direct attack and structure protection and tied portions of the perimeter into US-50 and the earlier Tower Fire burn scar. Steep ground slowed the last sections of containment, explaining why a 12,665-acre fire required 23 days to reach 100%. The useful lesson is that a recent burn scar can provide tactical leverage, but crews still need accessible, defensible line around its ends.

7. Widemouth 2 Fire — July 27

Lightning ignited Widemouth 2 southwest of Kanosh. Hot, dry and windy conditions supported uphill runs, torching, short crown runs and long-range spotting; the fire repeatedly challenged lines and became Utah’s largest fire of 2026. At various points evacuations affected Kanosh, Meadow, Fillmore-area neighborhoods and the Kanosh Band of Paiutes community. A shelter was opened, approximately 40 jail inmates were relocated, and roads and large portions of Fishlake National Forest were closed. 

The August 11 operation included 877 personnel, 23 crews, 40 engines and seven helicopters under a complex incident management team. Crews have used extensive dozer and hand line, water tenders, structure defense, aircraft, strategic firing and portions of the Wild Goose burn scar. Increasing monsoonal moisture has created opportunities for firing and line construction, but thunderstorms also bring erratic outflow wind, lightning and post-fire flash-flood hazards.

On August 7, a contracted Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane crashed while supporting the fire, killing pilots Miles Elliott and Christopher V. Andersen. The crash started a secondary fire that joined Widemouth 2, and dangerous fire conditions initially prevented responders from reaching the site. The FAA and NTSB are investigating; no causal conclusion should be inferred before their work is complete, as always. 

8. Black Canyon Fire — July 30


Black Canyon was started by lightning approximately 12 miles east of Spring City, near the Sanpete–Emery county line. It remained comparatively small before wind increased, then spread through steep, inaccessible terrain under single-digit humidity and gusty or thunderstorm-influenced wind. The Reeder subdivision was ordered to evacuate. Forest closures encompassed Potters Pond Campground and areas around Reeder Trail, Skyline Drive and Potters Canyon. 

Between one-quarter and one-half inch of rain fell on portions of the fire on August 9, but rugged ground, rolling material and a large unsecured edge left containment at 0% in the August 11 national report. Current behavior includes uphill runs, torching and short-range spotting; residences and energy infrastructure remain concerns.

The assigned force was 414 personnel, 11 crews, 20 engines and one helicopter. Earlier attack included additional state and federal aviation, while Utah National Guard Black Hawks supplemented scarce national aviation resources. Ground crews are mixing direct attack where access and escape routes permit it with indirect and contingency line around communities and infrastructure.

Additional incidents worth department study

Babylon Fire — June 26

This lightning-caused Manti-La Sal National Forest fire burned approximately 107,173 acres and was reported at 95% containment when the incident transitioned. By July 20, documented cost was $52.1 million; one earlier peak included 1,155 personnel, 27 crews, 43 engines and 15 helicopters. Five structures were recorded lost. It merits study because wind-driven fire in timber, pinyon-juniper and rugged canyon country threatened ranches, cultural and natural resources, communications facilities and access corridors while drawing heavily on a nationally strained resource pool. 

Snyder/Knowles Fire — June 27

The Snyder/Knowles incident near the Utah–Colorado border burned approximately 28,264 acres. A burnover killed firefighters Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson at the scene; Nathan Matthews later died from his injuries. Another firefighter survived with injuries. The crew was awaiting helicopter extraction when terrain-influenced wind and fire behavior overtook its location; heavy smoke and dangerous conditions complicated rescue. This is the most important 2026 regional case for studying extraction triggers, aviation availability versus aviation dependence, escape-route viability, changing wind in complex terrain, contingency communications and the point at which a remote assignment must disengage.

Rocky Canyon Fire — August 7

This human-caused fire near East Canyon and Henefer had reached 13,601 acres and 23% containment by August 11. More than 500 people remained evacuated during the day, although some Morgan County residents were allowed home. Strong wind pushed the fire toward Henefer, while outflow wind and higher overnight humidity later moderated part of the northern edge. Aviation cooled the edge for direct attack; dozers, roads, contingency line and timely firing along SR-66 protected homes and East Canyon values. Utah National Guard aircraft were used because national aviation resources were scarce. 



The clearest 2026 lessons for our department?

  • The initial-attack window can be measured in minutes or hours. Tower, Wild Horse, Iron, Cottonwood and Wild Goose all made consequential first-period runs in critically dry fine fuels.
  • Plan for aviation to be unavailable. Wind grounded aircraft on Cottonwood; smoke, terrain and resource scarcity have constrained other incidents including our own Black Canyon Fire. Widemouth 2 also demonstrates that aviation introduces its own serious risk.
  • Preplanned indirect line and well-timed firing saved communities. The firing north of Eureka and along SR-66 at Rocky Canyon are especially useful case studies.
  • Map recent burn scars before the call. Tower aided Wild Goose, and Wild Goose later offered leverage on Widemouth 2. Their value depends on fuel condition, alignment, access and secure flanks.
  • Prepare for simultaneous evacuation, structure defense and road management. Several incidents required sheriff-led evacuations while fire resources protected structures and transportation agencies closed major routes.
  • Treat contaminated landscapes as hazardous-material environments. Iron’s Superfund-area exposure is a reminder to identify mines, tailings, industrial sites and contaminated dust before committing personnel.
  • Resource scarcity must be built into local planning. Utah’s 2026 season has already burned more than 474,000 acres, including a record amount of forest and woodland, while multiple large incidents competed for crews, aircraft and incident-management teams.
